Things to Do in Conroe, Texas

The city of Conroe is a part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area and is about 40 miles north of the city of Houston. At Conroe’s center is Lake Conroe where visitors do everything from fishing to hiking to kayaking to swimming. Conroe has multiple art galleries and theaters to entertain and is even home to its very own beer brewery.  While staying in Conroe, a trip to the Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary is a must. Conroe, though considered a part of the Houston metropolitan area, operates as its own entity with its own set of local businesses and a thriving economy.

Lake Conroe is located approximately one hour north of downtown Houston. The lake extends 21 miles in length and covers about 21,000 surface acres. Lake Conroe serves as the reserve drinking water supply for the City of Houston and body of water for a large variety of recreation such as boating, fishing, hunting, golfing, swimming, water skiing, jet skiing, pleasure boating etc. The lake has its own set of hotels and condominiums, RV Parks, and waterfront boat storage.

The Crighton Theatre, located in downtown Conroe Texas at 234 North Main Street was built in 1934. The theater has put on over 100 stage productions by its own Crighton Players as well as numerous other professional performances by the Montgomery County Performing Arts Society and The Sounds of Texas Music Series.

Southern Star Brewing Company was founded in July 2007. Southern Star was the first craft brewery in Texas to produce their craft beers in cans. Their first beer was the Pine Belt Pale Ale. Since then, the brewery has added two additional signature beers: their Bombshell Blonde and Buried Hatchet Stout. In addition, Southern Star offers six seasonal beers that rotate throughout the year. Free tours of the brewery are held every Saturday at 1pm.

Saint Francis Wolf Sanctuary is a nonprofit charity in Montgomery, Texas, just minutes outside of Conroe. The sanctuary is owned by Jean LeFevre and was created to provide a permanent home for non-releasable wolves and wolfdogs.  Though the tours are by appointment only, once scheduled, one can expect a guided tour given by the knowledgeable staff. Learn about wolves and wolfdogs and the stories behind each of the animals staying at the sanctuary. Typically visitors are also given the opportunity to experience and intimate visit with a fully-trained wolfdog.
