Visiting Beaumont

Beaumont, Texas, like other Texas cities, is one that maintains its history and does so with a modern twist. With a history that dates back to the early 1800’s, Beaumont has a rich background that its residents are extremely proud of. In 1901, Beaumont experienced a dramatic even that changed the face of the city forever. Unbeknownst to them, an extremely valuable natural resource lay just below the ground. The event known as the Lucas Gusher explosion exposed overwhelming quantities of oil, which brought in spectators and businessmen alike looking to observe and invest. Out of this event, Beaumont became an economically thriving center. The city is chockfull of interesting eateries, museums, and nightlife to check out.

It is not unlikely that visitors coming into Beaumont will do so via Interstate 10. When you do, you will not want to miss Big Beau, a 135-foot alligator. Beau welcomes travelers to Beaumont as well as his home, Gator Country Adventure Park. Beaumont is actually home to a large alligator population, and the park is an excellent way to safely get acquainted with these ancient beasts. Gator Country has over 350 alligators, 4 species of crocodiles, snapping turtles, snakes, and other reptiles. “Big Al” lives at Gator Country and is the largest known alligator in captivity. Weighing about 1,000 pounds and almost 14 feet in length, Big Al upholds Texas’ motto of everything being bigger in the state!

A trip to Beaumont is not complete without a visit to a replica version of the Lucas Gusher. The Spindletop Gladys Boomtown Museum is a great place to learn about the city’s history as well as witness a reenactment of the explosion that happened back in 1901. The museum pays homage to the city’s beginnings by maintaining a general store, a dry goods store, a log cabin saloon, a barbershop, and of course, the replica oil gusher.

Southern cuisine is kind of a big deal in the Gulf Coast region, and Suga’s Deep South Cuisine and Jazz Bar does a great job of incorporating the essence of Southern culture with its live music and menu. With a constantly rotating menu and performance roster, visitors will never tire of what Suga’s has to offer.
