Dallas Past & Present

Dallas, the 9th largest city in the United States, doesn’t boast a nickname like “The Big D” by doing things on a small scale. And much like its sister Texan cities, Dallas is home to a diverse population of people that lives up to its namesake with its rich history. Dallas remains as traditional as it is innovative due to its residents and constant influx of new and interesting people.  Nearby, the city of Fort Worth is the 26th largest city in the United States. Both cities are home to numerous prominent businesses, annual events, and major attractions. Formerly two separate cities, Dallas and Fort Worth are now referred to collectively as DFW, or Dallas-Fort Worth. The two are connected by 30 miles of suburbs and have a light-rail system to get around with.

The city's prominence arose from its historical importance as a center for the oil and cotton industries, and its position along numerous railroad lines. Dallas was founded in 1841 and formally incorporated as a city in February 1856. Today, Dallas offers both a lower cost of living and a booming economy. The city has a tremendous job market and is home to over 18 major Fortune 500 companies. Some of which include: Exxon Mobil, AT&T, AMR, Kimberly-Clark, J.C. Penney, Dean Foods, Texas Instruments, Southwest Airlines, GameStop, Commercial Metals, Dr Pepper Snapple Group, and RadioShack.

Fair Park, is a 277 acre National Historic Landmark open year-round and is home to 8 different museums, the Cotton Bowl Stadium, an IMAX theater, and hosts the State Fair of Texas every year. Dallas is known for its multiple art museums, an aquarium, a zoo, several Texas-related history museums, and their very own Six Flags.

Dallas (Texas as a whole) is renowned for barbecue, authentic Mexican, and Tex-Mex cuisine. The Dallas-Fort Worth area is home to numerous restaurants featuring cuisines from all over the world.  Throughout the city, consumers can find everything from Indian to Chinese to Korean, and even Persian. On average, Dallasites eat out about four times every week, which is the third highest rate in the state.
